Do Cairn Terriers shed a lot?
They are low-shedding when the coat is properly maintained, especially with regular hand stripping.
2. Are Cairn Terriers hypoallergenic?
They are often described as lower-allergen dogs, but no dog is 100% hypoallergenic.
3. Do Cairn Terriers bark a lot?
They are terriers, so it is normal for them to be vocal. They may bark, growl or even howl. Good training and plenty of mental stimulation make a big difference.
4. Are Cairn Terriers good with children?
Generally yes. They are sturdy, playful and tolerant. Supervision is always needed with young children.
5. Are Cairn Terriers good with other dogs?
Usually good if socialised early. Some can be selective or a bit feisty with dogs of the same sex.
6. Are Cairn Terriers good with cats?
It depends. Cairns have a strong prey drive and many will chase cats unless they have been raised with them from a young age.
7. How much exercise does a Cairn Terrier need?
Daily walks of 2–4 miles plus playtime. They are energetic dogs that need both physical exercise and mental stimulation.
8. Do Cairn Terriers dig a lot?
Yes — they can dig up a flower bed in no time. Secure fencing and a designated dig zone help manage this natural instinct.
7. Hand stripping vs clipping – which is better?

8. How often should a Cairn Terrier be groomed / hand stripped?
Brush 2–3 times a week. Full hand stripping every 2–4 weeks creates a nice, clean rolling coat. We offer live hand-stripping classes — get in touch if you’d like to join.
9. Are Cairn Terriers easy to train?
They are intelligent but independent and can be stubborn. Positive, consistent training works best. For dogs with a high prey drive, some owners find e-collar training helpful when done with a qualified specialist.
10. How long do Cairn Terriers live?
Typically 13–15 years, and sometimes longer.

What health problems do Cairn Terriers have?
They are generally healthy, but watch for Legg-Calvé-Perthes, patellar luxation, eye issues, globoid cell leukodystrophy and liver shunts.
Are Cairn Terriers good apartment dogs?
Yes, provided they get enough daily exercise and mental stimulation.
Do Cairn Terriers like to cuddle?
Many do once their energy has been burned off. They are working dogs rather than typical lap dogs.
Can Cairn Terriers be left alone?
They can develop separation anxiety or destructive behaviour if left alone too long without proper training. Gradual training helps.
Should I wash my Cairn Terrier?
You should not bathe your Cairn regularly. Their weather-resistant double coat is designed to clean itself. Over-bathing can ruin coat quality and cause skin issues. Only bathe if the dog has rolled in something truly awful. In that case, use a shampoo made for coarse coats (such as Chris Christensen) and rinse thoroughly. Better daily habits:
Brush with a soft pin brush
Hand strip regularly
Occasionally clean just the belly and legs if needed
When should I start hand stripping my Cairn?
We recommend starting from 3–4 months of age.
How often should I hand strip my dog?
Ideally every 2 weeks to keep the coat in top condition. Never shave the dog and avoid scissors or stripping knives that cut the coat.
